Important tips to keep your computers and systems safe, secure, and dependable.
In this issue:  Laptop Safety, Is your backup running? Viruses to watch for.
Service, Integrity, Honesty

Your Laptop is much more vulnerable to physical damage than any desktop.  The screen and hard drive is most vulnerable to shock and failure. Following a few simple safety handling tips will ensure years of dependable operation.

1. Get a proper laptop bag, one that has a padded compartment for your machine.

2. NEVER place your power cord in the same compartment as the laptop.  It can press against the lid, and cause the screen to shatter. Always make sure your bag has an additional pocket for accessories, and keep the cord and anything else you carry, in that isolated compartment away from the machine. Always place the machine in the bag when you're not using it.

3. Never Throw the bag around. Always place it carefully into your car behind the seat. If you place the bag on the rear seat, lay it down so it lays flat, or better yet keep it on the floor... it can't fall farther than the floor.  If you're placing it in the trunk, make sure it's secure and can't slide around, or that nothing in the trunk can slide into it.

4. Close the top gently. Don't place any papers on the keyboard, as the space between the screen and the keyboard is really tight, and it was designed to have just enough room that the keys don't press against the screen when it's closed. Placing papers in there removes that protective air space. Don't rest things on top of the closed lid.

5. Never subject the machine to shock, shaking, or excessive vibration. Especially while it's running. Even moving the machine too much while it's running can damage the drives.  Some modern machines have a feature that turns off drive during excessive motion and then turns it back on when you set it down, even so, you should refrain from this practice if you can.

If the screen breaks:
If you've ever cracked your screen, you understand how this can freeze you right in the water. Even shutting down your machine is a challenge.  But don't worry, your hard drive is probably fine. Here's what you can do...  Most machines have an external VGA port to plug in an external monitor. To switch over to the screen, there is a combination of function keys that when pressed will allow you to switch the video to the external screen.  This will allow you to copy important documents that you will need to a USB memory stick. Your machine will be out of commission for about a week for screen replacement, so make sure you get what you need for the next couple of weeks. You will also be able to shut it down properly without loosing files. Screen replacements run about $120 to $180 depending on the screen. Turn around time is about a week.

If the hard drive is damaged:
In the event your hard drive is failing, you may get blue screen errors and freeze-ups.  If this happens, immediately shut down the machine at the first inkling of trouble, otherwise you could loose everything. Then immediately call us and we may be able to copy your information to an external drive so you can resume working on a different machine. We also have ways to recover or clone marginal drives to get you back up and running.  Drive replacement jobs are about $120.

Is your backup running?

Have you thought about your backup strategy? Are you simply changing a tape without giving much thought about if the backup is even working at all?  Are you even backing up? How do you know if it's getting all your critical data?

Remember that once your data is gone, if you don't have a reliable backup, the data could be lost forever. Recreating it all is a monumental task.  We can evaluate your backup and verify it's working.

If you're still using tapes, you need to rethink this, as tapes are most vulnerable to data los and failure.  We have partnered with DCS backup, a local Philadelphia company that can safely and securely back up your data at the moment it's created and/or changed.  that means the minute you create a file, it's backed up within 10 minutes. No more waiting till the midnight backup tape run.  If you value your data and your time and productivity, Call us to setup an appointment at (267) 496-0350.

The Latest round of Viruses and Malware:

It seems that those who create viruses are getting more clever tricking you into clicking on links and documents that will execute virus code on your machine.  Viruses and Malware are almost one and the same at this point. These things come in primarily through email and questionable web sites. The big ones right now are fake virus programs that trick the user into thinking their machine is infected. They trick you into buying the program, but mostly they can steal your credit card numbers.  You can take some simple steps to avoid these threats:

1. Even though your ISP might already filter for spam, it may not be effective enough. Subscribe to a spam filtering service like Spamarrest. We at J.G. Networking use spamarrest. it's easy to use and setup and very reasonable.

2. Make sure your antivirus software has a current license and it's up to date. We recommend Avast antivirus.

3. If you do not know who is sending a document to you, DON'T open it.  Instead, send a reply email to them asking what the document is. if it's legit, they will respond. If it's a spam, you will usually get a bounce back with a delivery error message. If it's a malicious attack specifically directed at you, the sender may respond with some message. Try to engage the person and see if it's legit. Proceed with caution

 4. Don't blindly click on links. Make sure you're clicking on links that you need and pertain to what you are doing. Read everything carefully, especially if it's a video web site, a gaming site or a gambling site.  Avoid porn sites altogether. They WILL deposit security risk items on your machine.

5. Don't accept invitations to run free registry cleaners, free virus scans or anything else that's "free". Nothing is really free on the internet.  It will cost you your security, or worse.  Ad don't go in with a mindset of "There's nothing they want to see on my PC..  You'd be surprised at the data that can be mined off your PC.
