Tossing Your Old PC in the Trash is a Security Risk

One of the worst things you can do with an old PC is tossing it out into the trash with everything else on trash day.  It's not only bad from an ecological standpoint, but also from a security standpoint.

Whether you've erased the hard drive or not, your info can still be easily retrieved and used against you.  The mindset of "There's nothing really important on my PC" is so naive, as small scraps of seemingly unimportant data can be pieced together and used to hack away and gain access to your online life as well as financial and personal info.

We have a program in place where you can call us and we can simply pickup your old PC. We either destroy the hard disk, or we do a DOD* level security wipe, and then recycle the components properly. We guarantee your data is securely disposed of and your identity remains safe.

Importance Of Regularly Scheduled Maintenance

One of the worst things that can happen to you as a business owner is opening your business in the morning only to find out that a critical computer or server is dead. We've come to depend more and more on our computers and we take them for granted, and we think less and less about what we would do without them.

A good way to avoid this scenario is by having one of our computer professionals come by for regularly scheduled visits.  Many of our customers have us stop by Monthly, some Bi-weekly, and some on a specific day and time each week.  As experts, we know what things to look out for to avoid potential problems, and we take care of those things before your business has to grind to a halt.

It's just smart money to have a maintenance schedule for any type of business equipment, especially something as critical as your computer systems.

We also monitor networking equipment, Wireless equipment and various types of office tech to be sure you're not going to be caught by surprise.

Taking the Mystery Out Of Outlook Archiving

You're using Outlook and every so often, some kind of box pops up about archiving, but you just "X" out of it and close it, never giving it a second thought.... That is until the day that Outlook no longer opens for you! If this has happened to you, there's a chance you've gone over the limit on your mailbox size.  In Outlook, all of your mail, and mail folders, attachments, pictures etc are all stored in one big file called a Personal File Folder or ".pst" file.  If this file starts getting too big and too complex with folders and sub folders, strange and aggravating things begin to happen. If you're on a corporate system the same applies to your Offline File Folder or ".ost" file.

This quick tutorial will help you to understand the archiving process, where the files are located, and how to effectively archive your stuff without hitting that wall.  It will also make you the office expert in archiving Outlook and making backup files.

Keep your Machine Clean!

A great way to avoid system failures, is to regularly dust out your PC.  Dust collects inside of PCs because of the cooling fans, and ironically, this dust can cake onto cooling fins and cause overheating and permanent component damage.

Some simple steps to take:

Keep the PC off the floor. The closer to the floor, the dirtier it gets.

In dirty environments such as a warehouse or factory, schedule regular air blowout sessions every other week or so.

Unplug the PC and take it outside.. this will be messy. Use the entire can of air, and the concentrator tube. Blow air through the CPU targeting the main board, Inside the power supply, and behind the front panel.  Especially target all fans. Most times the case is easily dis-assembled.  Your PC and your wallet will thank you!

WARNING: New Facebook "Koobface" virus spreading like wildfire?

Yet another facebook virus is spreading like wildfire. Sometimes I begin to wonder if it's all worth the trouble.  This particular virus (as with most) are designed to catch the less careful of those among us.  I cannot stress enough how important it is to carefully read and consider the necessity of the things we elect to click upon on the web.

Here is some information to help you identify and avoid the virus. It's important stuff, and it will help you to avoide needing to call us to troop on over and untangle the mess.

Description:
Koobface, an anagram of Facebook, is a computer worm that targets the Microsoft Windows users of the social networking websites Facebook, MySpace,[1] hi5, Bebo, Friendster and Twitter[2]. Koobface ultimately attempts, upon successful infection, to gather sensitive information from the victims such as credit card numbers. It was first detected in December 2008 and a more potent version appeared in March 2009.[3]

How it spreads:
Koobface spreads by delivering Facebook messages to people who are 'friends' of a Facebook user whose computer has already been infected. Upon receipt, the message directs the recipients to a third-party website, where they are prompted to download what is purported to be an update of the Adobe Flash player, or some other essential software. If they download and execute the file, Koobface is able to infect their system. It can then commandeer the computer's search engine use and direct it to contaminated websites. There can also be links to the third-party website on the Facebook wall of the friend the message came from sometimes having comments like LOL or YOUTUBE. If the link is opened the trojan virus will infect the computer and the PC will become a Zombie or Host Computer.

Among the components downloaded by Koobface are a DNS filter program that blocks access to well known security websites and a proxy tool that enables the attackers to abuse the infected PC.

Classification  Unknown
Type  Computer worm
Subtype  Computer virus

    * WORM_KOOBFACE.DC, which attacks Twitter.[5]
    * W32/Koobfa-Gen, which attacks Facebook, MySpace, hi5, Bebo, Friendster, myYearbook, Tagged, Netlog, Badoo and fubar.[6][7]

Are you simply changing a tape without checking if it's even working at all?   How do you know if it's getting all your critical data?
